The USS Oriskany (CV-34)

The USS Oriskany (CV-34) was an aircraft carrier of the Essex class belonging to the U.S. Navy. It was named in honor of the Battle of Oriskany during the War of Independence of the United States

He suffered, October 26, 1966 a serious accident during the Vietnam War. Lure magnesium suddenly took fire and sparked a major fire on board. Forty-four men, twenty-five drivers were killed and the ship had to return to the United States to undergo major repairs.

If the sinking of a ship at the end of life is rarely used today in favor of a sale for decommissioning the USS Oriskany, after being placed in the Beaumont Reserve Fleet, was sunk in the Gulf of Mexico May 17 2006 as part of a pilot project to create artificial reefs
